A Brooklyn gang leader has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in a deadly shootout that left one man dead in 2019.
Christopher Acevedo, the founder and leader of the Wood City street gang, was convicted of murder in aid of racketeering and causing death through the use of a firearm in May 2023.
Acevedo was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment to run concurrently by United States District Judge Diane Gujarati in federal court in Brooklyn.
The 28-year-old gang leader was found guilty of firing a dozen shots at a vehicle driven by David Hutchinson, a member of a rival gang, on August 26, 2019. Hutchinson was killed in the broad daylight shooting outside a bodega in the vicinity of 140th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard.
The murder was part of a long-standing feud between the Wood City gang and its rival, the Snow Gang, which had been ongoing since at least 2011.
According to prosecutors, Acevedo was expected to retaliate for the robbery of a gold chain from a high-ranking member of the Wood City gang. The chain was taken by a member of the Snow Gang, who later posted a photo of himself wearing the chain on social media.
Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, announced the sentence and thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York City Police Department, and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force for their work on the case.
The Wood City gang has been engaged in racketeering activity, including murder, drug trafficking, and various forms of fraud and identity theft, since at least 2010.
