Mekhi Greene, an 18-year-old from Washington D.C., was part of a group that carjacked a local resident at gunpoint on March 23, 2025, in the 3500 block of East Capitol Street Northeast. Greene, who was 17 at the time, and his co-defendants, including Keon Preston, used a fully automatic weapon to intimidate the victim. The carjacking occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. when the group, all wearing masks and dark clothing, approached the victim.
Police quickly responded to the scene and located the stolen vehicle, a white Volkswagen Jetta. After attempting a traffic stop, three of the suspects fled on foot, but officers were able to apprehend Greene and Preston. A search of the area and the vehicle resulted in the recovery of two firearms, including one with an automatic conversion switch and a round chambered inside.
Greene pleaded guilty to carjacking on September 19, 2025, and was sentenced to five years in prison. He will also serve 36 months of probation. His co-defendant, Keon Preston, pleaded guilty to the same offense and was sentenced to four years in prison on May 15, 2026.
The case was prosecuted under Title 16 of the D.C. Code and was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department announced the sentencing, acknowledging the work of those who investigated the case and thanking Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Green for prosecuting it.
