New Orleans Man Charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

A federal grand jury indicted 26-year-old Christopher Arana of New Orleans, Louisiana, on Friday, October 23, 2020, for violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2) – Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

According to the indictment, Arana faces a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000.00, a period of supervised release of up to 3 years, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00 for each charge.

U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser warned that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is part of the federal government’s effort to combat gun violence and reduce crimes committed with firearms. Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is a program that focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to address the root causes of violent crime.

The New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, and Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed of the Violent Crime/Strike Force Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office will prosecute it.

Arana’s charges stem from Project Guardian, a Department of Justice initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. The program enhances coordination among federal, state, and local authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.
