A high-ranking official behind bars: Christopher B. Epps, former Commissioner for the Mississippi Department of Corrections, has been sentenced to 235 months in federal prison for his role in a money laundering conspiracy.

On today, U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate handed down the sentence to Epps, who was also ordered to pay a $100,000 fine.

Epps previously pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy and one count of filing a false tax return. He faced a maximum sentence of 23 years.

The case was investigated by the FBI, IRS-Criminal Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Mississippi State Auditor’s Office, and the Leake County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Darren LaMarca and Pat Lemon, as well as financial analyst Kim Mitchell, prosecuted the case.

The investigation into Epps’ activities began in 2015, and he was initially arrested in 2015 as well.

During his tenure as Commissioner, Epps was responsible for overseeing the Mississippi Department of Corrections, which has a total of 12 prisons throughout the state.
