Gruesome details have emerged in the case of Christopher Bertolett, a 54-year-old man from Saint Louis, Missouri who traveled to Owensboro, Kentucky to sexually exploit a 14-year-old girl. Bertolett was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison, a fate he earned after a string of heinous crimes against the minor.
Bertolett had previously pled guilty to four federal child exploitation charges: online enticement of a minor, transfer of obscene material to a minor, production of child pornography, and interstate travel to engage in illegal sexual activity. The crimes were committed between January and May 2021.
According to court documents, Bertolett met the 14-year-old victim through an online software application in January 2021. Over the course of several months, the two communicated online, discussing various topics including sexual activity. Bertolett sent the minor explicit photos of himself, including pictures of his genitalia.
On May 9, 2021, Bertolett rented a car and drove to Owensboro, where he met the victim and took her to a local motel. It was there that he sexually exploited her, an act that would ultimately lead to his downfall.
Bertolett was arrested on May 10, 2021, and is now facing the consequences of his actions. In addition to his 30-year prison sentence, he has been ordered to pay the victim $10,000 in restitution and serve a life term of supervised release upon his release from prison.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of protecting our children from exploitation. As a community, we must remain vigilant and take steps to prevent such heinous crimes from occurring in the future.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Secret Service, the Kentucky Office of Attorney General’s Department of Criminal Investigations, and the Owensboro Police Department. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
