Asheville Man Sentenced to 11 Years for Methamphetamine Trafficking

ASHEVILLE, NC – A local man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation.

Christopher DeShawn Nelson, 42, of Asheville, was sentenced to 141 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for his crimes.

According to court documents, law enforcement initiated an investigation into Nelson’s activities after learning he was trafficking drugs and guns in the Hillcrest Apartments area of Asheville.

Beginning in late June 2022, law enforcement used a confidential informant to make several purchases from Nelson, including a 9mm firearm and methamphetamine.

In all, Nelson sold over 88 grams of methamphetamine and three firearms between June 28 and August 18, 2022, for a total of $1,130.

Nelson pleaded guilty to distributing five grams or more of actual methamphetamine on August 25, 2023.

At his sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger ordered Nelson to begin serving the federal sentence after he completes his 30-month state sentence for a previous drug conviction.

The investigation was a joint effort between the ATF, DEA, and the Asheville Police Department.

This case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation.

OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Hess of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville prosecuted the case.
