Crime: Federal authorities indicted a Sacramento man for possessing child pornography, a serious offense that can have devastating consequences for victims and their families.

Sacramento, California – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Christopher Eric Campbell, 48, was indicted on charges of possession of child pornography in March 2023. The indictment seeks forfeiture of three electronic devices used to commit the offense, including an iPad, a cell phone, and a hard drive, which could be worth a significant amount of money, potentially exceeding $250,000.

Campbell is currently in state custody on related charges. This case is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from predators and the need for continued vigilance in combating the spread of child pornography.

The investigation was led by the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, in collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Emily G. Sauvageau is prosecuting the case.

According to court documents, Campbell’s possession of child pornography is a serious offense that can result in severe penalties. If convicted and proven to have a prior conviction under the laws of any state relating to the sexual abuse of a minor, Campbell faces a minimum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison, a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison, and a $250,000 fine.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This program brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.

While Campbell is presumed innocent until proven guilty, this case serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit our children. It is essential that we continue to work together to protect our communities and bring perpetrators to justice.
