Roland Aujero, Child Pornography Possession, California 2024

Roland Aujero, 49, a former substitute teacher across multiple Bay Area school districts, was sentenced today to 60 months in federal prison for possession of child pornography. The sentence, handed down by Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, marks the end of a case that exposed Aujero’s disturbing double life—educator by day, predator by night.

Aujero, formerly of San Francisco, pleaded guilty on November 30, 2018, to one count of possession of child pornography under 18 U.S.C. § 2252(a)(4)(B). According to court filings, he admitted to possessing at least 20 videos and over 300 photographic images of child sexual abuse as of April 26, 2017. The material was discovered during a targeted investigation by the San Francisco Police Department’s Special Victims Unit.

Even more alarming, Aujero admitted to using encrypted messenger services to initiate conversations with children as young as 8 years old. During these exchanges, he requested in-person meetings with minors—crossing from digital possession into active solicitation. His access to schools in San Francisco, South San Francisco, Mill Valley, San Rafael, and San Diego raised immediate concerns about potential contact offenses.

A federal grand jury returned the indictment on June 5, 2018. Aujero has been in federal custody since entering his guilty plea and will serve his sentence immediately. In addition to prison time, Judge Illston imposed a strict 5-year term of supervised release, during which Aujero will be monitored for any contact with minors or use of internet-enabled devices.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan U. Lee, with support from trial attorneys Kimberly Richardson and Hector Lopez. Investigators stress that all known victims have been identified and their guardians notified, though they warn the digital trail may implicate others not yet accounted for.
