San Diego rancher Christian Clews, 52, was sentenced to 210 months in federal prison for possession and distribution of child pornography, closing a case rooted in decades of predatory abuse. The operator of a Carmel Valley horse ranch, Clews used his position of authority to exploit vulnerable minors, according to federal prosecutors. He was taken into custody immediately after the hearing in U.S. District Court.
Clews, who pleaded guilty in July 2017 but remained free on bond, admitted to distributing and possessing graphic material showing children engaged in sexually explicit conduct with adults and animals. During a forensic search of his computer, agents recovered more than 800 images and 600 videos of child sexual abuse. The materials included prepubescent boys and girls subjected to a range of violent sexual acts, as detailed in the plea agreement.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Renee Green laid bare the extent of Clews’ crimes, stating that his conduct went far beyond digital possession — it included two decades of repeated sexual victimization of minors. Victims, many of whom were intimidated into silence for years, finally came forward to law enforcement. Their testimonies revealed a pattern of manipulation and abuse tied directly to Clews’ role at the horse ranch, where he groomed and exploited young victims.
U.S. District Judge Dana M. Sabraw called the case “extraordinary” and described Clews’ actions as a “longstanding campaign of predatory conduct.” He emphasized that individuals who wrote letters of support were likely unaware of Clews’ “dark, very predatory” double life. “There has to be a consequence to that conduct; there has to be a day of accounting,” Judge Sabraw stated before imposing the sentence.
U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman underscored the lifelong trauma inflicted by child pornography: “The production of child pornography creates a permanent record of a child’s sexual abuse.” He praised the sentence as a necessary step in halting a man who actively contributed to the ongoing victimization of children. “These victims suffer a lifetime of re-victimization in knowing the images of their worst nightmare are forever memorialized on the Internet,” Braverman said.
Homeland Security Investigations Deputy Special Agent James Plitt emphasized the collaborative effort behind the prosecution, citing the San Diego Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and federal partners. “HSI is committed to working with local and international agencies to protect children from predators like Clews,” Plitt said. The case, investigated by HSI and the ICAC Task Force, highlights the multi-agency, transnational effort required to combat online child exploitation.
