Iowa City Man Sentenced to 6 Years in Federal Prison for Child Pornography

DAVENPORT, Iowa – In a shocking revelation, Christopher Kevin Carpenter, a 62-year-old resident of Coralville, Iowa, has been sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for receiving child pornography.

According to public court documents, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a CyberTip that a social media account, later determined to be associated with Carpenter, received files containing child sexual abuse material.

The investigation led by the University of Iowa Department of Campus Safety uncovered additional evidence, including 10 electronic and storage devices seized from Carpenter’s residence. A forensic examination of the seized devices and multiple cloud-based storage accounts revealed that Carpenter received images and videos containing child sexual abuse material dating back to 2001.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement, stating that Carpenter will serve a 6-year term in federal prison. Upon completion of his sentence, Carpenter will be required to serve a 5-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

Carpenter was also ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution, which is a substantial amount considering the severity of the crimes committed.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the federal government. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

Carpenter’s sentence sends a strong message that child pornography will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such activities will face severe consequences. The community can rest assured that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to protect children from exploitation.
