Christopher Charles Smith, a 34-year-old man from Asbury, Iowa, has been sentenced to 9 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography.
Smith pleaded guilty to the charges on January 3, 2025, and admitted to using a messaging service to communicate with others and trade child pornography. In October 2022, he distributed three videos of child pornography to an undercover law enforcement officer.
The sentencing took place on June 30, 2025, in Cedar Rapids, where United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams handed down the 108-month prison term. Smith will also serve an 8-year term of supervised release after his imprisonment.
This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims.
Smith’s case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The defendant is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case highlights the importance of Project Safe Childhood and the need for continued efforts to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. For more information about Project Safe Childhood and Internet safety education, visit www.usdoj.gov/psc.
