A Jay man was sentenced to 24 years in federal prison for shooting and killing his mother and wounding a second family member.
Christopher Leo Weeley, 42, was sentenced Tuesday in federal court for the crimes that occurred on March 6, 2021, at a home in Jay.
Weeley pleaded guilty to second degree murder in Indian Country and assault with intent to commit murder in Indian Country.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Weeley admitted to shooting his mother, Annie Marie Weeley, with a firearm, causing her death, and shooting a second family member twice during the incident.
The victims were transported to the hospital, where Weeley’s mother was pronounced dead, and the second victim underwent emergency surgery.
Weeley’s sentence includes 24 years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Roberts shared with the court that the surviving victim continues to receive treatment for her injuries and was unable to attend the hearing due to emotional distress.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI worked together to investigate the crime, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuting the case.
