TULSA, Okla. – The federal justice system has delivered a decisive blow to Mark Verron Callshim Jr., 38, who was convicted by a jury for Robbery in Indian Country and Carrying, Using, and Brandishing a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence.
In November 2021, surveillance footage presented to the jury captured the chilling scene of two men, later identified as Callshim, storming into a convenience store in Tulsa. One suspect pointed a gun at the cashier, who visibly trembled with fear as money was pulled from the register. After escaping with the loot, they drove off in a stolen blue Subaru Forester.
Tulsa Police quickly responded to the 911 call and launched an investigation. A detective’s keen observation led to a description of the suspects and the vehicle used in the heist. The stolen car was reported missing days prior by its rightful owner, who granted permission for police to search it. Inside, they found a partially smoked cigarette that would later play a crucial role in Callshim’s conviction.
The detective also shared an internal tip sheet with his department and received a call from an officer who thought he had spoken with a suspect. The detective cross-referenced the information and identified Callshim through a side-by-side comparison of tattoos from both the scene and the photos taken by the detective. Callshim denied involvement, but allowed his tattoos to be photographed.
Two DNA experts confirmed that the DNA found on the cigarette matched Callshim’s. With a criminal history that includes assault and robbery, Callshim will now face sentencing for this latest offense. The investigation was led by the FBI and Tulsa Police Department as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which seeks to reduce violent crime in communities like Tulsa.
The second suspect remains at large, and anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI or Tulsa Crime Stoppers. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mike Flesher and John Brasher prosecuted the case.
