MOBILE, AL – Joshua Kahanek, the 44-year-old Oklahoma rapist, was handed down a sentence today after pleading guilty to failing to register as a sex offender. The guilty plea came on May 21, 2025.
Kahanek’s conviction for Rape in the First Degree in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2008 led to a 20-year prison term, which he served until his release on April 11, 2022. His parole required him to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). Despite acknowledging his obligations through SORNA forms from 2022-2024, Kahanek failed to register in Alabama where he was employed.
The Mobile Police Department, working with the Foley PD and Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, nabbed Kahanek while he was on the job at a Target store in Mobile. He had been hired by a company to install fiber optic cables and had not registered as required.
At sentencing, Chief U.S. District Judge Beaverstock granted time served but imposed a 5-year term of supervised release for Kahanek. During this period, he will undergo sex offender treatment, substance abuse testing and treatment, and mental health care. He is also ordered to pay $100 in special assessments.
The investigation was led by the United States Marshals Service, Foley Police Department, Mobile Police Department, and Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kacey Chappelear prosecuted on behalf of the U.S. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation.
