GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Sonya Lamarcus Hopkins, a 37-year-old from Texarkana, Texas, has been locked up for life after being sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for methamphetamine trafficking. The Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs announced the heavy sentence today.

On June 6, 2013, Hopkins pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. The charges stem from a February 28, 2012 incident where Hopkins arranged the sale of 7 grams of the drug over the phone. The transaction was completed by an intermediary in Texarkana.

Hopkins was indicted on September 12, 2012, following a joint investigation by the Bi-State Narcotics Task Force, the Texarkana Police Department, the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Ann Cozby prosecuted the case.
