Christopher Paul Cavanaugh, Armed Methamphetamine Trafficking, Kentucky 2022

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Christopher Paul Cavanaugh, a 40-year-old Lexington man, has been sentenced to 240 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Karen C. Caldwell for his role in an armed methamphetamine trafficking operation.

Cavanaugh pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, as outlined in his plea agreement. According to the investigation, in March 2021, the United States Postal Service intercepted a package containing methamphetamine addressed to Cavanaugh.

Law enforcement subsequently discovered that Cavanaugh was in possession of approximately 1.95 kilograms of methamphetamine and three firearms. Cavanaugh admitted that he possessed the firearms in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities.

Cavanaugh pleaded guilty to the charges in February 2022. Under federal law, he will be required to serve 85 percent of his prison sentence, amounting to 204 months, before being eligible for release.

Upon his release, Cavanaugh will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for the remainder of his life. The investigation into Cavanaugh’s activities was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Lexington Police Department, with the United States represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger West.

The sentencing was announced jointly by Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Darren Hess, Special Agent in Charge, United States Postal Inspection Service; and Chief Lawrence Weathers, Lexington Police Department.

The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat methamphetamine trafficking and the consequences of involvement in such activities. Cavanaugh’s sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the harm caused to the community.
