The US government has officially closed its investigation into the CIA’s treatment of detainees, dropping all charges against those responsible for two deaths in custody.
**CIA Torture Probe Ends in Inaction**
The probe, led by AUSA John Durham, was launched in 2009 after Attorney General Eric Holder expressed concerns over alleged CIA mistreatment of detainees at overseas locations.
According to a statement from the Attorney General, Durham’s review found that while CIA interrogators may have used unauthorized techniques, there was not enough evidence to secure a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt.
Over the course of his investigation, Durham examined the interrogation and detention of 101 detainees, including those who were never in CIA custody.
Although Durham identified a number of matters related to the probe, including the Office of Professional Responsibility’s report on enhanced interrogation techniques, the Department ultimately declined to pursue charges.
Attorney General Holder’s decision to close the investigation has sparked outrage among human rights groups, who argue that the US government has failed to hold those responsible for torture accountable.

In June of last year, the Attorney General announced that Durham recommended opening full criminal investigations into the deaths of two individuals while in US custody at overseas locations.
Today, the Attorney General announced that those investigations have now been closed, with no charges brought against those responsible.
