Cigarette Smuggler Sentenced

A 46-year-old Georgia man has been sentenced to three years of probation for his role in a large-scale cigarette smuggling operation. Sukhdev Singh Virdi, of Dacula, Georgia, was found guilty of conspiring to traffic in untaxed cigarettes, a crime that can result in significant financial losses for the government and legitimate businesses.

Virdi, who worked as the store manager of American Cigarette Outlet, Inc., in Clearbrook, Virginia, admitted to transporting large quantities of cigarettes across state lines for redistribution and sale. The cigarettes were acquired in Virginia, where the tax rate for cigarettes is one of the lowest in the nation, and sold in other states, including New York, which has one of the highest tax rates in the country.

The cigarettes were possessed and transported in West Virginia, and Virdi’s operation was a major contributor to the state’s cigarette smuggling problem. According to court documents, Virdi’s scheme involved the purchase of millions of cigarettes in Virginia, which were then transported and sold in other states, often at significantly lower prices than those charged by legitimate retailers.

The investigation into Virdi’s operation was a joint effort involving the Homeland Security Investigations, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations, the Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office, the West Virginia State Police, and the New York City Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Stein prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

Chief U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided over the case, which was filed in 2017. Virdi had initially pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to traffic in untaxed cigarettes in June of that year. His sentence of three years of probation is a significant one, and reflects the severity of the crime and the impact it has on the community.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing cigarette smuggling and the need for continued efforts to prevent this type of illegal activity.
