A Pittsburgh resident has been sentenced to six years in the slammer for his role in a massive fentanyl trafficking operation, and it’s a tale of reckless disregard for human life and the law.
Eric Gerome Clancy, 38, was handed a 72-month sentence by Chief United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak, to be followed by five years of supervised release, on his conviction of violating federal narcotics laws. The sentence was announced by Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti.
The operation that brought Clancy to justice was a result of a traffic stop by Mt. Lebanon police on May 15, 2024. Officers discovered nine ‘bricks’ containing a mixture of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and xylazine in Clancy’s vehicle. They also found several ounces of crack and powder cocaine, a scale, and a large amount of U.S. currency.
Clancy’s stash was no small-time operation. At the time of the offense, he was on federal supervised release following a 90-month sentence in federal prison for a drug trafficking and firearms conviction. It’s a staggering example of how some individuals seem to be more of a menace to society than others.
Assistant United States Attorney V. Joseph Sonson prosecuted this case on behalf of the government. Rivetti commended the Mt. Lebanon Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Clancy.
Clancy’s case serves as a grim reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl on our communities. The synthetic opioid has been linked to thousands of overdose deaths in the United States, and it’s a crisis that continues to plague cities like Pittsburgh.
