Edward G. Kramer, 62, director of Housing Advocates, Inc., has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to charges of tax evasion and failure to pay over employee taxes.
Kramer, who also operated a private law practice and owned a property leasing business called Remark, admitted to underreporting his income by nearly $500,000 between 2007 and 2010. He failed to file returns for 2009 and 2010, despite taxable incomes of approximately $149,884 in 2009 and $270,687 in 2010.
In addition to personal tax fraud, Kramer is accused of failing to pay nearly $80,000 in taxes collected on behalf of Housing Advocates, Inc., which received federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, emphasized the gravity of Kramer’s actions, stating that those working within the legal system must adhere to the law themselves.
Kramer’s sentencing is scheduled for September 13, where he faces significant penalties for his criminal behavior.
This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigations and the Department of Housing and Urban Development – Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin J. Roberts handling the prosecution.
