Anthony Sharp, the manager of the Cleveland Postal Service, has been accused by a federal grand jury in Ohio of distributing controlled substances and stealing mail. The charges include conspiracy to distribute drugs, possession with intent to distribute, money laundering, and theft of mail.
U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman blasted Sharp’s actions, stating that the defendant is accused of stealing what he believed were drugs shipped through the mail, selling them for profit. He expressed gratitude for the efforts of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in the investigation.
Special Agent in Charge Kenneth Cleevely of the USPS OIG emphasized that postal employees are not paid to steal or distribute drugs, and that they will work with law enforcement to ensure those who violate trust face consequences.
Acting Inspector In Charge Tosha Dennis of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service praised the collaboration between federal and local law enforcement in protecting the mail system from criminal use. She highlighted the mission of the Postal Inspection Service to protect the public and the postal service from illegal drugs.
The investigation into Sharp began when USPS OIG suspected him of opening parcels containing controlled substances, stealing their contents, and then selling them. The affidavit states that on July 22, 2020, agents observed Sharp removing packages with methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl, placing them in his own mail hamper, and taking them to his vehicle.
Following a traffic stop, Sharp was detained and searched, resulting in the seizure of drugs, as well as other open mail parcels. As a result, he is ordered to forfeit approximately $100,000, a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle, and a 2019 White Polaris Slingshot. An indictment is not proof of guilt, and Sharp is entitled to a fair trial.
