Christopher Goodin, 33, of Elyria, Ohio, faced a 25-year sentence for sexually exploiting a 12-year-old girl and related child pornography offenses. The disturbing case highlights the dangers of online predators.
Goodin, who pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor, receipt, and possession of child pornography, controlled multiple social media accounts under assumed identities. He communicated with the victim in Utah, posing as both a young girl being harassed and an older man. Goodin coerced the victim into sending sexually explicit images.
In October 2018, authorities searched Goodin’s home, recovering a cell phone, laptop, and SD card containing a trove of child pornography. The recovered materials depicted bestiality, infants, toddlers, bondage, and fetish content.
“This defendant is a predator who tricked unsuspecting children into sending him graphic images by posing as someone else,” said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman. “People online are rarely who they claim to be, and parents need to know who their children are communicating with.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric Smith echoed the sentiment: “Individuals who exploit children deserve to spend a significant time behind bars. Parents are urged to be aware of whom their children interact with online.” The investigation was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol M. Skutnik and conducted by the FBI.
An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
