Elyria’s notorious drug kingpin, Octavious Smith, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for distributing heroin and cocaine, along with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The 38-year-old was caught selling the illegal substances on June 10, 2015, less than two months after illegally wielding a Desert Eagle 9mm pistol.
‘This defendant has a history of selling drugs and illegally carrying a firearm,’ Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja commented harshly. ‘He earned every day of this prison sentence.’
The FBI’s Special Agent in Charge, Stephen D. Anthony, praised the collaborative efforts of local and federal agencies. ‘This case is another outstanding example of what can be accomplished when local, state, and federal agencies work together to protect our community,’ he stated.
Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely echoed this sentiment. ‘Not only is the city of Elyria safer because of this, so is the entire Cleveland area. I want to thank the U.S Attorney’s Office for their continued assistance to the Elyria Police Department and the citizens of Elyria,’ he said.
This case marks the culmination of a concerted effort by federal and state partners to hold accountable individuals with significant prior drug and firearm charges who have continued to menace Lorain County. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert Corts, Vasile Katsaros, and Marisa T. Darden prosecuted Smith following an investigation led by the FBI and Elyria Police Department.
