Elyria, Ohio – Natividad Mundo, a 51-year-old former resident of Elyria, has been hit with federal charges for illegal reentry into the United States after being deported for drug trafficking.
Mundo, who once faced convictions for aggravated trafficking in cocaine and conspiracy to commit aggravated trafficking in cocaine, was removed from the country on April 17, 2012. Now, she’s back in Lorain County, facing charges of illegal reentry.
According to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, if Mundo is convicted, her sentence will be determined by the Court based on various factors including her prior criminal record and role in the offense. However, it is emphasized that the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, which for this offense could be significant.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Sassé is handling the case, which was investigated by the United States Border Patrol. An indictment, as a charge, does not prove guilt and Mundo is entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who attempt to reenter the country after being deported for serious offenses like drug trafficking.
