Bank Robber Gets 151 Months in Prison
Buffalo, NY – In a shocking turn of events, 34-year-old Clifford B. Smith, a Buffalo man, was sentenced to 151 months in prison for robbing four branches of HSBC Bank in the City of Buffalo between September 2011 and November 2011.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie P. Grisanti, who handled the case, Smith presented a note to the tellers on each occasion, threatening a gun and stealing a total of $31,392. The defendant’s modus operandi was to rob the bank twice within two weeks, with one of the tellers recognizing him from the earlier robbery.
The sentencing took place in the U.S. District Court in Buffalo, with Senior U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny presiding over the case. Smith’s crimes sent shockwaves throughout the community, leaving many wondering how someone could commit such heinous acts.
The investigation into Smith’s crimes was led by the Buffalo and Philadelphia Offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the Buffalo Police Department, under the direction of Commissioner Daniel Derenda.
As part of his sentence, Smith was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $31,392. This serves as a reminder that those who commit crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
Smith’s conviction and sentencing serve as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar crimes. The law enforcement agencies involved in this case should be commended for their dedication and hard work in bringing Smith to justice.
