A Logan County man’s reckless pursuit of wealth has landed him behind bars for a decade. Clifford Lee Griffin, 38, of Bruno, West Virginia, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and being a felon in possession of firearms.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Griffin was arrested on the evening of September 30, 2019, at a residence in the Gilman Bottom area of Logan County where he had been selling drugs. Members of the West Virginia State Police, who were executing a search warrant due to drug activity at the location, apprehended Griffin. The troopers recovered two loaded handguns, over 75 grams of methamphetamine, and over 100 grams of heroin.
Griffin admitted that he possessed the guns to protect his drugs and money. This brazen display of disregard for human life and safety has earned him a lengthy prison sentence.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston made the announcement and commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the West Virginia State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. imposed the sentence. Assistant United States Attorney Nowles Heinrich handled the prosecution.
Griffin’s fate was sealed on February 24, 2020, when the sentence was handed down. The case, 2:20-cr-00163, can be found on PACER by searching for the case number.
