Clinton Woman Sentenced for Tax Offenses

A Clinton woman was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for her involvement in a tax scheme that cheated a client out of over $300,000.

Regina Jimenez, 60, of Clinton, Iowa, was sentenced on May 17, 2013, by United States District Judge Stephanie M. Rose. In addition to her prison term, Jimenez was also ordered to one year of supervised release and pay $332,465.00 in restitution.

Jimenez operated AA Accounting & Tax Services, Inc. in Clinton, Iowa from approximately 2007 through 2011. During this time, she used the business to facilitate the theft of over $300,000 from a client who believed she would use the money to pay the client’s taxes.

Instead, Jimenez used the money for gambling expenditures, and did not report the stolen funds on her tax returns. The case was investigated by the IRS Criminal Investigation division and was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

The scheme was uncovered after an investigation revealed that Jimenez had used the stolen funds for her own personal gain, rather than using them to pay her client’s taxes.

Jimenez’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt stated that Jimenez’s actions were a betrayal of trust and a serious breach of the public’s trust.

The case serves as a warning to others who may be considering engaging in similar schemes.

Jimenez’s sentencing is a significant victory for the IRS and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and a reminder that tax evasion will not be tolerated.
