ST. LOUIS, MO – Clyde Jefferson, 28, of St. Louis, has admitted to a brazen string of robberies targeting individuals selling iPhones through online marketplaces. Jefferson pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber to five counts of interference with commerce by robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The scheme involved luring victims with promises of legitimate payment, then swapping counterfeit cash for their devices.
According to court documents, Jefferson preyed on sellers listing iPhones on popular platforms like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Letgo. He arranged meetups in both the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. But instead of handing over real money, Jefferson substituted it with fake bills, making off with the iPhones. The robberies occurred between August 3, 2018, and January 29, 2019, with Jefferson escalating the danger by pulling a firearm during several of the transactions.
The dates of those armed robberies are particularly chilling: August 3, September 21, and October 8, 2018, followed by January 8 and 29, 2019. The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Jefferson went a step further, shooting one of his victims. Jefferson disputes this claim, and the court will determine the truth of the matter during the sentencing hearing. The victim’s condition and details of the alleged shooting remain undisclosed at this time.
Federal investigators with the U.S. Secret Service, alongside the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the Richmond Heights Police Department, built the case against Jefferson. While the Secret Service is often associated with protecting dignitaries, they also have jurisdiction over financial crimes, including counterfeiting, which played a central role in this scheme. The joint investigation highlights the increasing prevalence of online marketplace robberies and the dangers faced by individuals participating in these transactions.
Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Roy is prosecuting the case. Jefferson now faces sentencing on January 14, 2021, where Judge Webber will determine the appropriate punishment for his crimes. Given the charges – multiple counts of robbery and a firearm enhancement – Jefferson is likely looking at a significant prison term.
