Derrick King Brooks, Cocaine Trafficking, Louisiana 2023

MONROE, La. – Derrick King Brooks, 45, of Monroe, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation in North Louisiana.

According to court documents, Brooks was arrested after a tip from Crime Stoppers led law enforcement agents to his residence on Medra Street in Monroe. Agents with the Metro Narcotics Unit seized baggies containing chunks of cocaine residue, which were later confirmed to be cocaine through lab testing.

During the search of Brooks’ residence, agents found additional bags containing cocaine, other narcotics, a loaded semi-automatic pistol, cash, and drug paraphernalia. A total of over $11,000 in cash, over 2,159 grams of powder cocaine, 29 grams of crack cocaine, and 38 pills were seized from the residence and Brooks’ vehicle.

The ATF and Monroe Police Department conducted the investigation, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Aaron Crawford.

Brooks was sentenced to 120 months (10 years) in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.

In a separate case, Anthony Tywan Newton, 38, of Ruston, Louisiana, was sentenced to 10 years and 4 months in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation in North Louisiana.

According to court documents, Newton was arrested after a search warrant was executed at his residence on Eastland Avenue in Ruston. Agents with the DEA seized plastic bags containing 17.5 grams of methamphetamine, as well as other narcotics and a pistol.

The investigation, which was conducted by the DEA and ATF, revealed that Newton had used some of the seized cash in earlier controlled buys. Newton was sentenced to 124 months (10 years and 4 months) in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
