Crime Wave Hits South Dakota: Two Men Sentenced for Role in Aggravated Assault
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two South Dakota men have been handed down a harsh sentence for their involvement in a heinous aggravated assault. Cody Nicolas Gill, 33, of Waubay, and Jesse Burton Robert Hopkins, Sr., 36, also known as JJ, of Sioux Falls, were each sentenced to three years and nine months in federal prison for their role in Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
The sentencing took place on March 14, 2023, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, before U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. Gill and Hopkins were each ordered to pay a $100 fine as a statutorily required special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Hopkins was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
The two men were indicted for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in October 2022 by a federal grand jury. They pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury on December 12, 2022.
According to court documents, in late July 2022, in Day County, South Dakota, Gill and Hopkins committed an aggravated assault against the victim. The victim was jumped by Gill and Hopkins without provocation, and was then punched and kicked while on the ground. The victim sustained serious injuries to his jaw, among other injuries, as a result of the assault.
This case was investigated by the FBI and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Sioux Tribe’s Law Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri prosecuted the case.
Gill and Hopkins were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving their sentences. The harsh sentence handed down to the two men serves as a reminder of the severity of such crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
