Colique Depree Brown, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Iowa 2022

A Davenport man’s reckless decision to flee from police and his subsequent attempt to retrieve a stolen handgun after being apprehended, have landed him behind bars.

Colique Depree Brown, 28, of Davenport, was sentenced to 60 months in prison on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. This sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.

The events that led to Brown’s sentencing began on the morning of September 19, 2021, when two vehicles were observed racing in Davenport. A trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle in which Brown was a passenger, but the vehicle fled into Bettendorf and eventually crashed in a residential neighborhood.

Brown and three other occupants fled on foot, with Brown carrying a t-shirt. He ignored law enforcement’s directives and had to be tased, causing the t-shirt to fly out of his hands and land in a nearby yard. The handgun, which had been reported stolen, was later found near where Brown was tased.

Review of surveillance video revealed that the t-shirt had dropped the handgun as Brown was tased. Brown then made a phone call from the Scott County Jail, requesting someone to return to the crash site and retrieve the handgun before the sun came up. However, officers had already confiscated the handgun and were left with evidence of Brown’s guilt.

Brown pleaded guilty to the charges on May 2, 2022. His case was investigated by the Bettendorf Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal made the announcement of Brown’s sentencing.

Brown’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of fleeing from police and the consequences of attempting to possess a firearm as a convicted felon.
