BOSTON – Juan Antonio Colon, 52, a Dominican national, is staring down a federal sentence after admitting today he illegally re-entered the United States after being deported twice. The guilty plea comes after a November 2016 traffic stop in Roxbury that uncovered more than just a suspended registration and a false name – it revealed a pattern of evasion and a history of run-ins with the law.
Colon pleaded guilty to one count of re-entry of a removed alien in U.S. District Court before Judge William G. Young. The arrest stemmed from a routine motor vehicle stop where Colon was found to be in possession of Oxycodone. While he attempted to conceal his identity, federal agents utilized comparative fingerprint analysis to positively identify him despite alterations to his prints. This identification linked him to prior deportations from the United States in May 2009 and July 2013.
The seemingly simple traffic stop quickly spiraled into a federal case, highlighting the persistent efforts of Homeland Security Investigations to track and apprehend individuals who repeatedly violate immigration laws. Colon’s attempt to evade authorities by providing a false name and tampering with his fingerprints only served to deepen his legal trouble.
The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a hefty fine of $250,000. However, actual sentencing is at the discretion of Judge Young, who will consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors before imposing a penalty. Regardless of the length of his prison term, Colon will be deported from the United States upon completion of his sentence.
Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and Matthew Etre, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, jointly announced the guilty plea. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Soivilien of Weinreb’s Criminal Division, demonstrating a coordinated effort to address immigration violations and drug offenses within the district.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing hearing scheduled for June 27, 2017. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in securing the border and addressing the criminal activity associated with illegal reentry. Colon’s case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal immigration laws and attempting to evade justice.
