A Colorado man is behind bars after allegedly distributing fentanyl that resulted in the death of an Alpine, Texas resident.
Douglas Christopher Steele, 53, of Denver, Colorado, was arrested Saturday in Denver on charges related to his alleged possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.
According to the indictment, Steele allegedly conspired with others to possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, which contained a detectable amount of fentanyl. The indictment alleges that Steele’s alleged fentanyl distribution resulted in the death of an Alpine resident.
Steele made his initial appearance Monday in a federal court in Denver, where he is charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. If convicted, he faces 20 years to life in prison for each count.
A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division, with assistance from the Alpine Police Department, Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Greenbaum is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
