COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – Marek Cortez Brewer, Jr., 24, of Columbia, is facing a long stretch behind bars after receiving a 15-year federal prison sentence for a litany of firearms and drug offenses. The sentence, handed down by Senior United States District Judge Terry L. Wooten, comes after Brewer pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of a firearm in connection with drug trafficking. This wasn’t just a gun charge; it’s a portrait of a man fueling the chaos on Columbia’s streets.
The evidence laid bare in court painted a disturbing picture. Between February 2020 and February 2022, Brewer illegally possessed at least five firearms across five separate occasions. Three of those firearms were stolen, and crucially, investigators linked them to a string of violent crimes plaguing the city – attempted murders, shootings, armed robberies, and the relentless flow of drugs. Brewer wasn’t just holding guns; he was allegedly supplying the tools for others to inflict harm.
The arrests tell the story. February 22, 2020, found Brewer with a 9mm pistol and the tools of the trade: a digital scale, bags of marijuana, and packaging materials. November 14, 2020, brought another arrest, this time with a stolen and loaded .40 caliber pistol following reports of shots fired. January 11, 2021, saw a high-speed chase reaching 125 mph, ending with a stolen vehicle and a dropped 9mm – a gun later connected to a shooting on Assembly Street just a month prior. He reportedly bragged about the chase from jail, claiming he’d “go back up the road” and wasn’t even bothered.
The escalation continued. May 18, 2021, involved an alleged armed robbery where Brewer and others reportedly forced a victim to hand over a firearm, then opened fire as the victim fled. Brewer was found with the .40 caliber pistol stolen from *that* victim. Then, February 26, 2022, brought allegations of Brewer’s involvement in a shooting that left two victims wounded – one in the back, one above the eye – following another police chase exceeding 100 mph. This time, the haul included suspected narcotics, $900 in cash, and yet another 9mm pistol.
Federal prosecutors didn’t just focus on the guns and drugs. Evidence also revealed Brewer’s affiliation with a documented street gang, suggesting a network fueling his criminal activity. The 15-year sentence is followed by three years of court-ordered supervision, and importantly, there’s no parole in the federal system. This is a full commitment to keeping Brewer off the streets.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Columbia Police Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Assistant United States Attorney Elliott B. Daniels prosecuted the case, framing it as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program – a national initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through targeted enforcement and community-based prevention programs. The message is clear: those who flood our streets with guns and drugs will face the full weight of the law.
