Joel Brown, Dogfighting and Methamphetamine Trafficking, Ohio 2023

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A chilling twist in the city’s underworld: Joel Brown, 38, of Columbus, has pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting and methamphetamine charges. The case is a stark reminder of the dark underbelly of organized crime.

Brown admitted to not only possessing and training dogs for fighting but also to intentions to distribute methamphetamine. His Franklin County residence was home to 11 pit bull-type dogs, chained with heavy-duty tow chains and kept in an arrangement typical of dogfighters – within sight yet out of reach from each other.

On Brown’s Facebook account, a video of a black pit bull with scars running on a slatmill, a tool often used by dogfighters, was discovered. The dogs were eventually rescued by Columbus Humane in conjunction with the Columbus Division of Police after authorities responded to complaints and obtained search warrants.

The search also yielded tools and supplies for animal fighting and approximately 52 grams of methamphetamine. Brown was indicted in December 2024 and faces a potential sentence ranging from five to 40 years for the methamphetamine crime, along with up to five years for animal fighting.

Representing the United States in this case are Assistant United States Attorneys Nicole Pakiz, Kevin W. Kelley, and Senior Trial Attorney Adam Cullman. The investigation was led by Columbus Humane, the Columbus Division of Police, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Brown’s guilty plea underscores the severity of his crimes and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to crack down on such heinous activities.
