OXFORD, Miss. – A grim reminder of the consequences for illegal gun possession came today as Columbus man Tyson Jamal Hairston, 34, was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in a firearms violation at The Links at Oxford Apartments.
Court records show Hairston, who had already pled guilty to a felony, was caught with two pistols and narcotics during a search by officers executing a warrant for kidnapping. One firearm was found while serving Hairston at the apartment complex, with another discovered in his dwelling.
On Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Michael P. Mills handed down a sentence of 96 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. Speaking on the case, U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner emphasized the necessity to protect citizens from violent crime and those who use guns to commit it.
ATF New Orleans Field Division Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson highlighted the message sent to the community: ‘Convicted felons illegally possessing firearms will be held accountable as we prioritize neighborhood safety.’ The ATF has been actively involved in reducing gun violence through programs like Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and keep communities safe.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between local, state, and federal law enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Howell Addison prosecuted the case. PSN, launched on May 26, 2021, focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based violence prevention efforts, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
