Port Charlotte Dealer Busted for 2,700 Grams of Meth
Federal prison for 12 long years is what awaits Port Charlotte resident John Alton Knight, Jr. (58), after being caught with a massive haul of methamphetamine and fentanyl. The 58-year-old’s guilty plea on April 26, 2023, sealed his fate.
According to court documents, on August 9, 2022, Knight was arrested by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office after a thorough search revealed over 2,700 grams of methamphetamine and approximately 49 grams of fentanyl in his possession. Deputies uncovered a treasure trove of evidence pointing to Knight’s intention to distribute the illicit substances, including a scale, plastic baggies, a drug cutting agent, and vacuum sealed bags.
But Knight didn’t go down without a fight. He was found in possession of a whopping 2,700 grams of methamphetamine, an amount that could have supplied countless users with their fix. And to make matters worse, 49 grams of fentanyl was also on the scene, a substance so potent it’s no wonder Knight thought he was in the clear.
Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan led the prosecution against Knight, bringing the full weight of the law down on the defendant’s head. The investigation was a joint effort between the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration, a partnership that showed the war on drugs is far from over.
U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber delivered the verdict, handing Knight a 12-year sentence for his crimes. The question on everyone’s mind is: will this be enough to curb the flow of illicit substances in the area? Only time will tell.
The DEA and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office are undoubtedly breathing a sigh of relief, but the real victory lies in keeping the streets safe from the likes of Knight. The community can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served, albeit 12 long years too late.
