The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is launching a public awareness campaign focused on protecting investors from fraud in the digital age. The initiative, centered around a virtual event titled “Technology and Fraud: Stopping Scams in a Digital World,” is scheduled for Wednesday, October 4th, as part of World Investor Week (October 2-9).
The event will feature two panels addressing the growing threats of social media-driven investment scams and the potential risks and benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in financial services. Experts from regulatory bodies, financial education programs, and technology innovation hubs will participate.
The first panel, “Exploring Effective Social Media Investment Scam Interventions,” will delve into the prevalence of fraud on social media platforms, examining current trends like romance scams and those involving digital commodities. Discussions will center on the mechanisms fraudsters use to target victims and potential interventions for educators and policymakers.
The second panel, “Is AI for Investors Road-Ready?,” will explore the implications of AI in the financial sector. Panelists will discuss the capabilities of AI, its appropriate use, and methods for identifying potential scams utilizing the technology. Key questions to be addressed include whether AI is currently reliable for financial decision-making and how investors can safeguard themselves.
According to Dan Rutherford, Associate Director of the CFTC’s Office of Customer Education and Outreach (OCEO), “Social media enabled fraud is nothing new, but many may not be aware how fraudsters can leverage these platforms…to draw smart, rational people into bad decisions.”
Jorge Herrada, Director of the CFTC’s Office of Technology Innovation (OTI), emphasized the dual nature of AI, stating, “As AI technology emerges, experts and investors agree there is both promise and pitfalls…education is critical to understand the capabilities of AI, when it is appropriate to use, and how to avoid being scammed.”
The CFTC’s OCEO is dedicated to investor protection through education and outreach, while OTI serves as the agency’s hub for financial technology innovation. Registration for the virtual event is free and open to the public. Further information and registration details can be found on the CFTC’s website.
