BOSTON – Floyd Young, 50, of Shelton, Conn., has hit rock bottom after pleading guilty to multiple counts of bribery in a scandal that shook the collegiate world. The Connecticut man, who once held facility maintenance roles at three institutions, admitted steering contracts to favored contractors in exchange for hefty bribes.
Young, charged in March 2019 and arrested soon thereafter, faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for February 1, 2021. The man who was once trusted with maintaining the integrity of academic institutions has now become its pariah.
According to court documents, Young received bribes totalling $919,066. He directed contracts worth much more, with contractors inflating invoices to cover their illegal payments. On occasion, no-work invoices were submitted, and the payoffs were split between Young and the contractors.
The U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and FBI Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolonta announced the charges today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex J. Grant will lead the prosecution.
Young’s actions have not only tarnished his own reputation but also those of the institutions he betrayed. The plea agreement is a stark reminder that even those in positions of power are not immune to the law’s scrutiny.
