PROVIDENCE, RI – The grim saga of Connecticut’s Daniel Alexander Smith, 20, from Windsor, CT, comes to a close as the federal judiciary metes out justice. Smith has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in the trafficking of nearly 90 grams of fentanyl, a crime that sent shockwaves through the Rhode Island community.
Smith’s admission to conspiring with another individual to sell a total of 89.67 grams of fentanyl over a period of three months is a stark reminder of the deadly toll of illegal drug trade. The transactions, which took place under the watchful eye of law enforcement, were thwarted when agents seized the firearms and drugs Smith was involved in selling.
The arsenal of weaponry seized during the investigation included a Century Arms AK-47 rifle, Glock 26 semi-automatic pistol, revolver, handguns, and a shotgun. The discovery of a fully automatic weapon in Smith’s possession only served to underscore the gravity of his actions.
Today, U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith sentenced Daniel Alexander Smith to 60 months of incarceration followed by three years of federal supervised release. Assistant United States Attorney Julie M. White led the prosecution in this case, demonstrating the commitment of the justice system to hold those responsible for such heinous acts accountable.
United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha expressed gratitude to the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut for their assistance in this prosecution. The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the FBI Rhode Island Safe Streets Task Force, which includes agents and officers from various law enforcement agencies. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence.
