PROVIDENCE, RI – In a case that highlights the devastating impact of fentanyl trafficking, a Windsor, CT, resident has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in delivering nearly 90 grams of the deadly opioid.
Daniel Alexander Smith, 20, of Windsor, CT, was sentenced to 60 months of incarceration by U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith for his conviction on one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl.
According to court documents, Smith conspired with another individual to sell a total of 89.67 grams of fentanyl in five separate transactions between late February and May 2023. The transactions took place while Smith was under surveillance by members of law enforcement, who quickly seized the firearms and drugs.
During the investigation, law enforcement seized a wide range of firearms, including a Century Arms AK-47 rifle, a Glock 26 semi-automatic pistol, a High Standard revolver, a Taurus PT111 9mm handgun, an FN Tactical Model 502 .22 caliber pistol, a Glock 19x 9mm pistol, and a High Standard M200 20 gauge shotgun.
At the time of Smith’s arrest, members of law enforcement seized a loaded Glock 22 firearm with a 22-round magazine and a Switch attached from Smith’s vehicle. The Switch converted the firearm to a fully automatic weapon, a particularly deadly modification.
United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha praised the efforts of the FBI Rhode Island Safe Streets Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for their role in the investigation and prosecution of this case. The case was also assisted by the FBI Northern Connecticut Gang Task Force.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve. The Justice Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy in May 2021, strengthening PSN based on core principles of fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
