Colombian Man Sentenced to 168 Months Imprisonment for Cocaine Trafficking
A federal court in Alabama has handed down a significant sentence to a Colombian national for his role in a major cocaine trafficking operation. Nester Javier Salazar-Montano, 38, was sentenced to 168 months imprisonment for his involvement in the trafficking of 4,951 kilograms of cocaine.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer on August 4, 2022. Salazar-Montano pleaded guilty to violating Title 46, United States Code, Section 70506(b), Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine on Board a Vessel in April 2022.
Documents filed with the guilty plea established that on December 13, 2021, a marine patrol aircraft detected a low-profile go-fast vessel in international waters near Malpelo, Colombia. The US Coast Guard Cutter James diverted to intercept the vessel, which was eventually boarded and discovered to contain the large quantity of cocaine.
Salazar-Montano was among four individuals involved in the drug smuggling venture, which included Alonzo Escobar-Valenzuela, Fernando Preciado, and Henry Hernadez-Garcia. All four individuals have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing before Judge Moorer.
The US Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama, Sean P. Costello, praised the outstanding work of the United States Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, and Homeland Security Investigations in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
The case was investigated by the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney George F. May.
