Convicted Felon Charged with Cocaine and Firearm Violations
A 40-year-old man from Braddock, Pennsylvania, has been charged with violating federal drug and firearms laws, federal authorities announced today.
Mario Tiller, 40, is accused of possessing with intent to distribute cocaine base, commonly known as crack, on June 19, 2018. According to the indictment, he also unlawfully possessed a Glock 9 millimeter pistol in furtherance of the drug offense.
Tiller has a lengthy criminal history, with multiple convictions for crimes punishable by more than one year in prison. Those convictions include two convictions for possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, two convictions for terroristic threats, and one conviction for theft by unlawful taking.
Under federal law, anyone who has been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. The indictment alleges that Tiller’s possession of the firearm was in furtherance of the drug offense.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of not less than five years and up to life in prison, a fine of $1,500,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Christy C. Wiegand is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, conducted the investigation leading to the indictment.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. An indictment is an accusation, and Tiller is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
