ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a harsh blow to the streets of Albany, convicted murderer Willie Green, 42, was sentenced on Monday to 63 months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm. This conviction serves as a stark reminder that felons with a history of violence will be held accountable for their actions.
According to court documents, Green was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge stemming from an incident on January 1, 2022, in which he possessed a loaded pistol in Albany. This conviction is a direct result of an extensive investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) with the assistance of the Albany Police Department.
Green’s prior felony conviction and extensive criminal history, including a 2024 murder conviction secured by the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, made him ineligible to possess the pistol. Despite this, he chose to break the law, putting himself and the community at risk.
United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III delivered a scathing rebuke of Green’s actions, stating, ‘Willie Green cannot serve enough prison time for the crimes he’s committed. He should never get out, and if he is granted parole by New York State, he will be immediately taken to federal prison to start serving his term of imprisonment in this case. Albany is safer if this murderer stays locked up for good.’
Green will serve his 63-month sentence consecutive to his 25-to-life term on his state murder conviction. Upon release, he will face a 3-year term of supervised release. This sentence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to holding violent offenders accountable and protecting the community from those who would seek to harm it.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the ATF and the Albany Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikayla Espinosa prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an evidence-based program proven to reduce violent crime. Project Safe Neighborhoods focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
