UTICA, NEW YORK – Charles Wager, 55, of Castleton-on-Hudson, New York, was convicted yesterday of attempting to entice a minor into engaging in unlawful sexual activities. The jury reached their decision following a grueling 4-day trial.
United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Janeen DiGuiseppi, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the FBI, made the chilling announcement. Wager is now facing life imprisonment after exchanging thousands of sexually explicit messages with a child he believed to be just 10 years old.
‘The evidence against Wager was overwhelming,’ said Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin S. Clark. ‘He discussed performing sexual acts on this young girl and even sent nude pictures of himself. It’s a horrifying case that highlights the dangers of online predators.’
In 2002, Wager pled guilty to raping a 15-year-old girl in Rensselaer County Court. He has been required to register as a sex offender since then. His latest arrest in February 2021 revealed his history of molesting other minors decades ago.
Sentencing is set for June 8, 2023, where Wager faces a minimum term of imprisonment of 20 years, a maximum term of life, and a fine of up to $250,000. The judge’s decision will be based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.
