Joseph Scott Sword, Threatening the President, Texas 2011

BEAUMONT, Texas – The gritty Eastern District of Texas has seen another chapter of its dark underbelly unfold as Joseph Scott Sword, a 26-year-old from Cooper, Texas, also known as Stretch, has been sentenced to federal prison for making threats against the President of the United States.

Sword’s transgression was exposed when he pleaded guilty on Dec. 19, 2012, to the crime. Today, U.S. District Judge Ron Clark sentenced him to 46 months behind bars.

According to court documents, Sword’s sinister behavior reached a peak on May 31, 2011, when he penned a letter filled with threats against the President and his family while incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Stiles Unit. He falsely claimed to be part of the violent street gang Black P Stone and alleged that his gang members were keeping tabs on the First Family.

Sword was not only facing federal charges but also completing sentences for burglary and robbery, totaling 14 years and six months before being transferred to federal prison to serve his sentence. His actions were swiftly investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall L. Fluke.

This is a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those who attempt to undermine the nation’s highest office, and it serves as a cautionary tale for any would-be threats to public officials.
