Vernon E. Copeland III, Minor Enticement, New York 2023

NEWBURGH, NY – Vernon E. Copeland III, 39, of Newburgh, New York, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced to life in prison by U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas. Copeland was convicted in July 2023 of coercion and enticement of a minor, aggravated sexual abuse, and transportation of a minor with intent to engage in sexual activity – crimes spanning over a decade and leaving a trail of shattered lives.

The sentencing, announced today by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, culminates a brutal case detailing Copeland’s systematic predation on vulnerable young victims. Williams didn’t mince words, stating Copeland “preyed on some of the most defenseless members of our community.” The courage of four victims, one of whom was just nine years old when the abuse began, was highlighted as crucial to securing the conviction. Their harrowing testimonies painted a chilling picture of Copeland’s calculated cruelty.

Court documents reveal a disturbing pattern of abuse. In 2004, Copeland committed aggravated sexual assault on two minors – a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old – in a motel on Thanksgiving Day. Six years later, in 2010, he continued his depravity, raping a 16-year-old in an apartment in Newburgh. But the most prolonged and sickening abuse occurred between 2016 and 2020, where Copeland repeatedly raped and sexually abused a girl over a four-year period, starting when she was only nine years old.

As law enforcement began to close in on Copeland in 2020, he fled New York, attempting to evade justice. He was eventually apprehended in Florida in 2021 and extradited back to the Southern District of New York to face the consequences of his actions. The multi-agency investigation, spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, the Town of Newburgh Police Department, and the Tampa Police Department, proved instrumental in bringing Copeland to justice.

Beyond the life sentence, Copeland will also be subject to lifetime supervised release. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Danielle Sassoon and Timothy Ly, alongside former U.S. Attorney Lindsey Keenan, skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Copeland’s crimes were met with the full force of the law. This sentence serves as a stark warning: those who exploit and abuse children will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable.

The impact on the victims and their families will undoubtedly be long-lasting. While no sentence can fully repair the damage inflicted, today’s outcome provides a measure of closure and sends a clear message that the Southern District of New York will not tolerate such heinous acts. Copeland’s reign of terror is finally over, and the community can breathe a collective sigh of relief – though the scars of his crimes will remain.
