Marion, Iowa’s Cordell Maleec Mayfield has been convicted by a federal jury in Cedar Rapids for two counts of firearms violations. The 28-year-old man, who once ran a used appliance business in the area, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
The conviction followed a three-day trial where evidence was presented that Mayfield had a weapon with a destroyed serial number at his Marion business. The incident occurred on September 19, 2024, when police responded to a welfare check after receiving a concerned call about Mayfield’s daughter who was with him at the time.
Mayfield faces a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, and three years of supervised release if convicted. His sentencing is pending after the preparation of a presentence report by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence across communities. Assistant United States Attorneys Patrick J. Reinert and Ashley Corkery prosecuted the case, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Marion Iowa Police Department, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation.
