Maria Francisca Portalatin, Firearms Straw Purchase, Iowa 2025

Crime journalist’s grimy report: Maria Francisca Portalatin, a 53-year-old Sioux City woman, was sentenced July 9, 2025, to 51 months in federal prison for her role in a brazen firearms straw purchase. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.

Portalatin pled guilty on February 7, 2025, admitting to being a prohibited person in possession of firearms, making false statements during the purchase of firearms, and more. Evidence revealed she purchased multiple firearms using false statements at Dunham’s Sports Store, with knowledge that her co-conspirator, Freddie Summerville, was prohibited from owning them.

Portalatin’s actions reached a sinister peak when law enforcement discovered the four firearms at her residence in June 2024, alongside evidence of methamphetamine use. Her deceitful behavior continued as she helped conceal Summerville, who was wanted on a federal warrant.

During an interview with police, Portalatin admitted to lying on ATF forms and aiding in Summerville’s harboring. In July 2024, both were apprehended near Sioux Falls with methamphetamine. The sentence also includes $1,400 in fines and a 2-year term of supervised release.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing gun violence and violent crime. Investigated by the Sioux City Police Department and ATF, it was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Kraig R. Hamit and Kevin C. Fletcher.
