PORTLAND MAN LANDS 12 YEARS IN FEDS FOR CHILD PORN

BOISE – A 52-year-old man from Portland, Oregon was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor. Scott L. Austin pleaded guilty to the charges on October 28, 2014.

Austin engaged in sexually explicit chats with an undercover police officer and a person he believed was the officer’s minor child. He admitted to sending three sexually explicit images accompanied by contemporaneous sexually explicit chats directed at the minor in August 2011.

According to court documents, Austin showed up at a predetermined location in Boise on October 11, 2013, where he was met by undercover detectives. He asked the female officer to flash him and suggested that she show her breasts. Austin also stated that he wanted to see the female clearer to determine if she was the same person he had seen in photos.

The case was investigated by the Boise Police Department, which is a member of the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006, by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Austin’s sentence is a result of his guilty plea to the charges. He will serve 12 months and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The Idaho ICAC Task Force and Project Safe Childhood are working together to protect children from online predators.

As part of the sentence, Austin will also be required to register as a sex offender. The investigation and prosecution of Austin’s case is a reminder that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to protect children from those who would seek to harm them.
